Munday runner-up in Oscas

DEVON Cricket League chairman Stuart Munday just missed out on the top prize at the ECB OSCAs – and he didn’t mind a bit.

The 70-year-old retired businessman from Plympton, who has played cricket for Tavistock since 1964, was nominated in the boards and leagues category of the Outstanding Services to Cricket Awards.

Before assuming the chairmanship of the league nearly three years ago, Munday had been a volunteer fund raiser for the Lord’s Taverners for more than 20 years, a primary school coach, captain and chairman of his club and a competition administrator.

Munday was nominated for the award, the ECB’s way of saying thanks to volunteer workers at the grass roots of the game, by Bovey Tracey chairman Nigel Mountford.

In his nomination letter, Mountford said of Munday: “I can actually say I’ve never met anyone who puts in so much effort as a volunteer to so many aspects of the cricket world in Devon.”

From a long list of 40, Munday made it to the final three, who were invited to Lord’s for a  slap-up lunch at the awards ceremony.

“It was a brilliant day at Lord’s and I finished runner-up to a very worthy winner from Bedfordshire, who has achieved much for young cricketers and women’s cricket,” said Munday.

“My award was presented by Steve Finn and second out of 40 isn’t bad.”
