Kumara making right impression for South Devon

TEIGNBRIDGE T20

BOVEY Tracey march on at the top of the Teignbridge T20 League following a 50-run win over Chagford in the second round of matches.

Bovey were always in the driving seat after racking up 176 for nine in their 20 overs – Kiwi U19 star Andrew de-Boorder top scoring on 39.

After openers Chris Clayton (20) and Ben Ayres (10) got Bovey up and running, de-Boorder took control of the middle order.

With Pete Bradley (22), Harrish Kumar (33) and Chris Bradley (16) for company, de-Boorder took Bovey up to 148 for six. The end came when he was the first of three scalps claimed by Steve Sizmur (3-19), who was Chagford’s most effective bowler.

Chagford were up against it from the start after Bovey seamer Ryan Bougard (2-20) nipped out former Bovey pair Mark Gribble (17) and Arnie Searle (4).

Kumar bagged dangerman Del Lammonby for a duck, and when Dan Green had Andy Parttison out for one, Chagford were 31 for four.

Colin Mortimore, another Bovey old boy, hit 40 and with chip ins from Neil Rowlands (25) and Andy Niven (12), Chagford reached 125 for eight before their overs ran out.

SOUTH Devon bounced back from their defeat by Abbotskerswell in the Teignbridge T20 to beat Chudleigh by 60 runs.

Chandra Kumara, the Sri Lankan all-rounder making a big impression at Marsh Road this season, butchered the Chudleigh bowling with a rapid 73 not out off 37 balls after coming in at second wicket down.

Opener and captain Dave Knowles made 26 off 20 balls towards a tally of 155 for five.

Jan Bothma had two for 34 from four overs while veteran Mark Heather was one for seven in three – sharp bowling in this form of cricket.

Chudleigh’s top scorer was Derek Perry with a brisk 34.

Although Simon Rooke and Jan Bothman both made 17, South Devon’s bowling was too miserly for Chudleigh to get up to the run rate.

Spinners Phil Blackmore (4-17) and Matt Coult (2-13) put in frugal four-over spells while seamer Paul Hooper took one for 13 in his stint.

IPPLEPEN were winners by 20 runs in the derby clash with Abbotskerswell.

After setting a competitive total of 155 for five, build around a fourth-wicket stand of 65 between Luke Tuckett and Lee Curtis, Ipplepen fielded and bowled well to defend it.

James Wotton set the standard with a sharp run-out of Troy Kennedy, and a stinging catch to dismiss a disbelieving Marcus Green.

Excellent out cricket led to the key wicket of Mike Pugh (34), from a superb throw from Sam Wakeham on the point boundary.

Always struggling to maintain the run rate, the final Abbots wicket fell in the last over with the score on 135.

   South Devon 155-5 (C Kumara 73no, Knowles 26; J Bothma 2-34), Chudleigh 95-9 (D Perry 34; P Blackmore 4-17, Matt Coult 2-13). South Devon bt Chudleigh by 60 runs.

   Bovey Tracey 176-9 (A de-Boorder 39. H Kumar 33, P Bradley 22, C Clayton 20; S Sizmur 3-19), Chagford 125-8 (C Mortimore 40, N Rowlands 25; R Bougard 2-20, J Mason 2-20). Bovey bt Chagford by 50 runs.

   Ipplepen 155-5 (L Tuckett 68, L Curtis 44, M Green 2-23), Abbotskerswell 135 (M Pugh 34; J Watkins 3-8, K Wakeham 3-25). Ipplepen bt Abbotskerswell by 20 runs.
