Thorverton aiming for top in B Division

THORVERTON want to cast off the nearly tag this season and get out of the B Division at long last.

Fourth last year and fifth in 2013, Thorverton are always there or thereabouts for most of the season.

The return of Queenslander Cody Francis-Griggs this season may just be the catalyst for change needed to push Thors into the top two.

Francis-Griggs had two hugely successful seasons with the club – 2008 and 2009 – when he aggregated 1,451 runs and took 67 wickets.

He returned again midway through the 2013 campaign to stabilise the B Division club after Kiwi Luke Boyadijian had to go home early.

Batting better may also help the cause, according to captain Graham White.

“Too many times last season we were 20 for three – and you don’t win many games like that,” said White.

“Having Cody back is massive for us – and having George Greed opening from ball one will make us stronger.”

James Hope will be free of work commitments from halfway, which should impove the all-rounder’s availability.

Another boost for Thors is that Will Denford is fit to bowl this season having had injury issues for the past few years.

“He must be better as he is talking about playing rugby again next winter,” said White.

The season starts at Axminster on Saturday.

SHOBROOKE Park have a new captain and a new overseas player this season, which opens against visiting Ivybridge

Chris Simpson has taken over from Phil Anning as captain with Jon James as number two.

The overseas player is former South African U19 star Dylan Blignaut, who is officially an opening bowler but looks like he can bat as well.

Blignaut slammed 120 on Sunday against Holsworthy in a North Devon League game.

Otherwise it is much as it was last season at Shobrooke, although hopefully with a better outcome.

Shobrooke finished sixth behind Thorverton in the B Division and Simpson is looking for top four as a minimum requirement.
