Yau wants Torquay to get basics right

TORQUAY’s 67-run defeat by Plymouth has prompted a rallying call from skipper Justin Yau ahead of tomorrow’s Rec Ground meeting with North Devon.

“We need to go back to basics,” said Yau.

“Our bowling and fielding was pleasing, but our shot selection was poor for this stage of the season and contributed to our demise.

“We need to occupy the crease and I am confident we have enough firepower to turn it round this wekend

Steve Luffman made a patient 30 - totally out of character for a press-on batsman – while all around him were struggling against Somerset’s Max Waller.

Then veteran left-armer Dave Burke – 41 and still going strong with the new ball – shot out Torquay’s early order.

After Burke had finished with Torquay – half an over earlier than planned due to a leg injury – they were 31 for seven and holed below the waterline.

Tail-ender Ben Francis hung around for a dogged 21, but there was no way back for Torquay, who were all out for 84.

Torquay skipper Justin Yau felt Torquay were not switched on and need to get that right against visiting North Devon this Saturday.

“Plenty of us were in ‘indoor’ mode and we must adapt to the conditions quickly as it's such an unforgiving division,” said Yau.

“Plymouth’s seamers bowled superbly and made it very hard for us. David Burke was unplayable at times.”
