DEVON SENIOR CUP REPORTS 2007

QUARTER FINAL

EXETER and Bovey Tracey are both through to the last four of the Devon KO Cup after wins over Barton and Tavistock respectively in the quarter-finals.

But Sidmouth's cup hopes ended at Plympton where they lost a low-scoring game by 42 runs.

Exeter's Rob Holman reproduced most of the form that brought him a century against Torquay in the Premier Division 24 hours earlier with a top score of 80 as Exeter made 200 for seven at Cricketfield Road.

Holmam and Mike Wilkinson (43) notched 128 for the first wicket with Arnie Searle topping the score up with 23 not out at the end.

Jack Porter (3-42) was the Barton bowler with the best figures.

Barton's reply was a disjointed affair with plenty of batter getting in getting set then getting out again. Porter (26) was the only one of them to make more than 18.

Barton were already looking down the barrel of defeat before Porter was dismissed by Paul Short.

Getting Porter out was the first of three wickets Short claimed in the space of four balls to hasten Barton's demise. Justin Dollow and Jon Tipper were the other main wicket takers as Barton were dismissed for 145.

Tavistock's Devon Cup adventure ended at Bovey Tracey in a game trimmed down to 38 overs each after a rain break in the first innings.

Bovey Tracey's total of 212 for seven was constructed around two key partnerships for the second and third wickets, both of which featured Andy Kingdon.

Kingdon who made 79, put on 119 with Matt Makepeace (54) then added another 66 with captain Chris Bradley.

Wickets only tumbled near the end when left-arm seamer Lee Baker was deployed in the Tavvy attack and he claimed five for 36.

Tavistock had nothing to lose by going for it from the off and set off at pace with Ian Grey and veteran John McGahey giving the Bovey bowling a good caning.

McGahey clattered round to 47 off 55 balls while Grey hit 33 off 39 to get the score up to 99 without loss after 14 overs. Some wayward Bovey bowling helped.

Steve Luffman kept the chase going with 41 and only when he was out at 186 for eight with three overs to go could Bovey feel safe.

Tavistock were all out for 202 off the last ball of the match.

Bovey shared the wickets around with the Bradley brothers taking two each, as did Simon Newton, and James Mason scooping three

Alex Trevarthan top scored on 62 while the going was good for Plympton, hitting two sixes and six fours against a docile Sidmouth attack.

Jeremy Williams made 23 and at 106 for three everything in the garden looked rosy for Plympton.

Sidmouth skipper Will Murray threw the ball to seamer Josh Bess looking for a breakthrough – and got substantially more than he expected.

Three wickets fell for just four runs added and only Keith Donohue made a double-figure score after that as Plympton collapsed to 144 all out in the last of their 40 overs. Bess finished with figures of five for 11.

Sidmouth were never allowed to get going in reply – Jamie Pfeiffer (3-12) and Donohue (2-12) made sure of that – but were always a threat while Hancock was there.

Plympton got the break they desperately wanted when Duncan Hefford took a brilliant diving catch to dismiss Hancock off the bowling of a player who only came on to make up the numbers at the last minute.

Danny Hawker had turned up to watch, but ended up being pressed into service as an extra bowler when Tony Brown pulled a hamstring in the warm-up.

Hawker and Mike Zantiotis bagged two wickets each as Sidmouth slid to 102 all out with more than six overs to bowl.
