NORTH DEVON HOLIDAY HOMES LEAGUE - WEEK NINE

Latest tables

DIVISION ONE

THE top flight saw all three of its scheduled matches beat the previous day's heavy rains and what was produced was a trio of big wicket wins for Lynton & Lynmouth, Heathcoat and Sandford.

The big surprise came at Instow where North Devon fell to a third defeat of the season and, given that historically title winning sides never lose more than three games it means that if they are to claim the top honour this terms it is going to have to be nothing but wins from now until the end of the campaign.

The star of the show was a visiting batsmen who had begun the morning eating breakfast in Yorkshire! Heathcoat's Sam Medley plays his Saturday cricket in the Yorkshire League and he called his skipper Pete Randerson at 7:50 am to see if the game at Instow was indeed going ahead and, when he got the nod, he jumped in his car and made his way to North Devon.

The home side had batted first and apart from Warren Miller (70) and Stuart Rhodes (39), there was precious little to show in terms of the home run getters as Pete Moisan and Qassim Adams both claimed three wickets as the hosts were bowled out for 196.

The Knightshayes, and Medley in particular, made batting look very easy post tea, taking just 32 overs to complete an eight wicket win. Chris Parkes (37), Randerson (26) and Adams (20), all played supporting roles around Medley who struck as good an unbeaten century as they have seen at Instow for some time.

Victoria Park were also beaten for the third time this term when they went down by eight wickets at Sandford where the Creedy Park side had a match winning performance from their South African all rounder Tianne Mostert. It had al started so well for the visiting side as they strolled to 174-2 thanks to Neil and Mark Bettis who put on 160 for that 2 nd wicket. Neil hit thirteen 4's and a six in his knock of 90 whilst Mark hit eight 4's and a 6 in an innings of 66. However the final seven wickets fell for just nine runs as Mostert ran through the middle and late order to claim his fivfer and finish with figures of 5-30 whilst Russell Discombe took 3-29.

Richard Tucker led the run chase which was completed in double quick time. It took just 28 overs and one ball for the Creedy Park faithful to see their side claim victory with the unfortunate Tucker caught behind just a single run short of what would have been a richly deserved century. Mostert plundered an unbeaten half century – the pair adding 119 for the 2 nd wicket.

Lynton & Lynmouth also struck a big win as they claimed a seven wicket success at Newton Tracey, this after losing their first wicket off the first delivery chasing down the home side's offering of 202-9. Simon Gear top scored with 48 whilst other useful contributions came from Phil Steward (32), John Warmsley (26no) and John Turner (26). Ali Lloyd and Matt Ryan both bagged braces of wickets for Lynton & Lynmouth who then saw Steve Hunt depart after facing just one ball. But Graham Fitt (77) and Ian Hobs (23) steadied the ship and it was left to the previous week's hero, Dave Proctor (36no) and Lloyd Ali (47no) to see their side to victory.

Division Two

NOT a ball was bowled in anger in Division Two with the games at Barnstaple & Pilton (v Hatherleigh), Filleigh II (v Shobrooke Park) and Morebath (v Beaford), all falling to the heavy Saturday rains that left the respective grounds waterlogged.

Division Three

THERE was big disappointment at Witheridge where Incorrigibles were looking forward to using their new home pitch for the first time with the visit of Barnstaple & Pilton II but the previous days heavy rain put paid to any chance of play and it was a similar story over at Bratton Fleming where Bude were the scheduled visitors.

There was play at Shebbear but here it was very much a case of wham, bang, thank you M'am, as the home side hustled out North Devon II for just 42 in a dozen overs and then knocked the runs off to have both sides tucking into an early tea at 3.50pm. Kyle Franklin had 3-3 and Jack Frith will start the next game on a hat-trick after he clean bowled the last two visiting batsmen. Martin Bray and Ollie Wicket then saw their side to a ten wicket win.

Division Four

THREE games were played in Division Four and two produced low scoring, close encounters.

At Cheriton Fitzpaine there was a surprise win for Kelseymen who were bowled out for just 136 and then bundled out the hosts for 113. Barney Huxtable (49) top scored for the visitors whilst Phil Cutler (3-16) and Robbie Keight (3-23), were the main wicket takers. But the home side found batting just as difficult with only John Pitt (21) and Jeremy Trix (19), making any impression with Mark Mitchell taking 3-21.

Ten man Newton Tracey II fell 18 runs short of a valiant run chase at Lynton & Lynmouth II. The home side had been bowled out for 112 with only Steve Hobbs (46) and Richard Paines (20) lasting too long out in the middle. But the reply floundered on 94, 52 of which came from the bat of Oli Simmonds as Connor Constable came on toward the end of the game and cleaned up the tail taking 3-6 in three overs.

A much changed Victoria Park II side – they had six changes from the previous outing – was well beaten by rapidly improving Halberton. The hosts bated first and posted a respectable total of 186-9 with contributions from Ian Brown (40), Nigel Taylor (30), Mark Stephens (27) and skipper Tim Lane (21). The wicket taking duties for the Mid Devon side fell to Adrian Hills (3-21), Ritchie Durrant (2-26) and Mark Slade with 1-33 whilst the successful run chase was led by Aussie Greg Maher with 81. Jez Turner, skippering the side in the absence of Dan Coles, hit an unbeaten 33, Mike Turner hit 30 and the other not out batsmen was the impressive Jim Cooper. The Uffculme school pupil was 26 not out when the winning line was crossed. For the losing side Nigel Taylor, making his debut appearance for the side, crowned an impressive first start with a couple of wickets to add to his earlier classy runs.

Division Five:

THE Bishops Nympton versus Filleigh II clash met a watery grave but they played in all the three other basement section games. Barnstaple & Pilton II claimed a six wicket win at Bude where they bowled the home side out for 118.

Home skipper Mike Taylor, batting at number 7, was unbeaten on 46 when his sides last wicket fell and there was a fine innings from Matt Haywood, who hit 25. Peter Gleave took 3-16 for Barum who then had John Brierley striking an unbeaten 49 in the successful run chase.

Jack Maunder might be a tender 12 year old, but he kept wicket superbly for Heathcoat II, conceding just the one bye as table topping and 100% Belstone batted first at Knightshayes and closed on 157-9. Will Pearce top scored with 38 and skipper Scott Tremaine chipped in with 26. Will Brown took 4-33 for Heathcoat and Mike Tourle bagged. The hosts were then bowled out for 122 with Phil Head hitting 32 and Ben Hall being unbeaten on that score at the close of the contest. Two wickets each fell to the visitors Parsons, Holmes and Tremaine.

North Molton were comfortable winners over visiting Petrockstowe. Rob Ayre top scored with 63 in a home total of 182 and then Charlie Down claimed 4-16 as the visitors were bowled out for 123.
