Devon Indoor U15 School County Championships

The Boy’s Indoor Cricket for schools reached it’s climax with the U15 County Finals at Exeter University on 26th January. After a late withdrawal, 7 schools descended upon the University Sports Park for their final day of competitive Indoor Cricket of the season.

The usual format of pool matches followed by semi-finals and a final gave rise to a full day of activity.

The late withdrawal of Churston Ferrers Grammar school due to a raft of illness left three schools in Pool A. South Dartmoor looked a powerful batting side as they reeled off 230 runs in winning their two matches and secured a semi-final berth. In a close game Park lost out to The Kings School by 10 runs meaning Kings progressed to the second semi.

Pool B was a close affair with calculators being required to separate 3 teams equal on points each with 2 wins and a loss from their three games. Plymouth College’s belligerent batting saw them come out on top by virtue of their 261 runs scored. Kingsbridge came second in the group – 10 runs ahead of Torquay Boys Grammar whom they beat by 11 runs in their encounter. Great Torrington completed the group and battled well without some key players who had chosen to go skiing rather than play cricket!!

The first semi-final pitted South Dartmoor against Kingsbridge. The former batted first and again looked strong in posting 106 despite losing three wickets in the final over. Kingsbride started their chase solidly without losing wickets. However, by the 4th over they were well behind the run rate and were never able to get back on track. They finished on 68 and paid the price for facing too many dot balls.

Semi-final 2 saw Kings take to the field. After a couple of steady overs the Plymouth batters were able to accelerate. They kept the pedal to the metal and reached a decent looking 91. As in the first semi, it was the 4 over mark that saw the difference in the teams begin to show as Kings gradually fell behind the asking rate. 2 wickets in the 7th over effectively ended their hopes and despite a big last over they ended up 22 runs short.

The battle of the “Kings” saw the Ottery school defeat Kingsbridge to secure the bronze medals.

In the final, Plymouth College batted first. The top three batsmen each reached their retirement score. The only wicket of the innings fell in the 7th over which slowed the run rate for all of 1 delivery! A total of 106 was set. Having equaled or surpassed this score in each of their previous matches South Dartmoor must have felt confident. The first over of their reply did not go well as 2 wickets fell. The second over went similarly badly for the chasing side as 2 more batsmen were sent on their way. The remaining batters kept the score ticking over but with such a large total the bowlers were always in control and Plymouth restricted South Dartmoor to 86 runs. Plymouth were duly crowned County Champions.
