Division One

NO change at the top of the table as both Filleigh and Heathcoat claimed victories.

Heathcoat had the more convincing result with a crushing-ten wicket win at home to Lynton & Lynmouth.

The visitors were bowled out for 153 as Justin Williams (4-13), Liam Lewis (2-24) and Sam Smith (1-15), claimed wickets, the latter serving up a fiery opening spell.

The run chase was led by skipper Pete Randerson (69no) and opening partner Lewis who struck an unbeaten 70 to sit nicely with his earlier brace of wickets.

Filleigh were involved in a much closer encounter, indeed Bideford skipper Ian Hayter very nearly proved to be his side’s match winner but once he departed they slipped to an 11 run defeat. Filleigh batted first and were bowled out for 177. Toby Lockhead (39), Mark Prideaux (21) and Ali Boyd (20) were the principle run getters whilst the home wicket takers were Alec Hodges (2-21), Martin Barrett (2-24), Dave Small (2-27) and skipper Ian Hayter (2-15).

A couple of wickets fell early on in the run chase but when Hayter came in, he batted at seven, he quickly plundered 43 in just 28 balls with two 6’s and seven 4’s to push his side to within touching distance of victory. With four overs to go Bideford required 21 to win but once Hayter departed, so to did nay hope of the win and the reply floundered 11 runs short on 166.

Newton Tracey did their survival hopes a power of good by registering only a third success of the campaign with a four wicket win at home to Victoria Park who were beaten for the fifth outing on the trot! John Gordon (34) and Mike Cashmore (32no) were the main run providers in a visiting total of 198-8. John Wormsley, Phil Steward and John Turner, each bagged a brace of wickets for Newton Tracey who timed the run chase to perfection thanks to Rob Gears 66 and an unbeaten 39 from Wormsley. Tom Anderson and Colin Bettis both claimed a couple of wickets for Park who are beginning to look nervously over their shoulder at the wrong end of the table.

Division Two

BRAUNTON power on in their pursuit of a return to the top flight they departed a couple of seasons ago.

They had something of a shock at bottom of the table Filleigh II who bowled them out for 201 but the promptly skittled the hosts out for 57. Matt Harival top scored with 70 and Ian Roberts chipped in with 37 but it was off spinner Jack Wakeley who was the talk of the tea table as he weaved his way to the wonderful figures of 7-22 from 5.4 overs. Jack Spicer then claimed 4-15 as the home side lost wickets at regular intervals as only Charlie Popplewell (19) and John Bordon (18) spent much time out in the middle. Filleigh remain rooted to the foot of the table whilst Braunton, with nine wins from ten starts, seem set to return to the First Division.

The most convincing victory in the section came at Holsworthy where Beaford strolled to a nine-wicket win. James Long and Andy Layton both hit 43 and Steve Drew chipped in with an unbeaten 25, as Holsworthy were restricted to 173-7. Nigel Lake (3-28), Pete McMillan (2-24), Alan James (2-34) and Mark Lake (1-15) were the wicket takers for Beaford who lost only McMillan (41) in the run chase. The win was confirmed with Geoff Lake (50no) and Mark Lake (35no), at the wicket. Andrew Butler claimed the only wicket for the home side.

There was a nail biting finish at Bratton Fleming where Hatherleigh claimed a single wicket win. The hosts batted first and posted a healthy enough 202-9. Adam Paine led the way with 91 and Pete Simmonds struck a solid 31 whilst Colin Welch helped out with 25. Gareth Tidball was the pick of the visiting bowlers with 3-37 and then he showed his all round skills with his sides top score of 81 as Hatherleigh got home with one wicket, and four balls, to spare. Simmonds claimed a three wicket haul to seal a fine all round individual performance for the beaten hosts.

Division Three

SANDFORD inflicted only a third defeat of the campaign on Shebbear who they beat by eight wickets, and on their own patch too!

The star of the show was undoubtedly skipper Simon Ashplant who struck an imperious 74 in the post tea run chase. The hosts had been bundled out for 141 with a spectacular, if rare, failure for their run machine Martin Bray who was caught behind by young wicket keeper Tom Sparrow for a duck! Ollie Wicket (58) and Jamie Pengelly (44no) held the home innings together as Shaun Hawkins claimed 4-15 for the Mid Devon side. Then their skipper Simon Ashplant took charge leading the run chase with clinical precision.

North Devon II inflicted more misery on Ilfracombe who they beat by 50 runs. The visitors batted first and closed on 159-4 with runs from Dan Pickard (44), Bob Heaman (37) and Tom Stanton (37). Heaman then took 3-17 and Pickard bagged a brace of wickets as the home side were bowled out for 109.

Westleigh continue to look for a promotion berth after they beat visiting Bude by four wickets in a low-scoring affair. Bude batted first and were dismissed for just 99 as James Corrie claimed 3-39. James Ford then hit 44 but it was home skipper James Tythcott who hit the winning runs with a mighty six to finish 18 not out.

Division Four

THERE was a feast of runs at Instow where North Devon III eventually saw off a brave run chase from Cheriton Fitzpaine.

Alistair Crombie hit 85 but his was very much the supporting role as Stuart Rhodes hit his umpteenth North Devon League ton with 138 in the home side’s offering of 288-7. Ben Coe took 3-49 and Jim Cutler claimed 2-44 for Cheriton who made an excellent fist of an unlikely run chase, one which ended on 228-7. Jeremy Trix led the way with 70, Coe hit a fine 30 to add to his earlier haul of wickets. Clifford Hayes and Josh Cole each took two wickets for the Instow side.

Victoria Park II were able to field what they would describe as their regular 2nd XI for only the second time this term and, rather like when they took to the field the previous time, they won, beating Newton Tracey II by seven wickets. The visitors batted first and thanks to the Oli Cowlin (31) and his father Mark (30) were able to close on a competitive 148-9. Dave Gordon (3-20), Tom Hayne (2-29) and Nigel Taylor (2-20) were the wicket takers for the home side who sailed to victory led by Dave Gordon (68), Stuart Russell (31) and Mike Brown (24). The two unbeaten batsmen at the close were Tim Lane (10no) and Ian Brown (13no).
The game at Lynton & Lynmouth where the 2nd XI were set to receive Bideford II, was hit by the Saturday night rains leaving no play possible.

Division Five
WITH leaders Belstone inactive, North Molton ensured that they kept the pressure on with a comprehensive home win over Heathcoat II who they beat by 72 runs.

The home side batted first and closed on 255-4 thanks to Guy Loosemore’s unbeaten 88 and contributions from Chris Turner (56), Matt Geen (40) and Pete Davis (35). Nick Lineham was the only visiting bowler to have any sort of success as he took 2-62.

Sean Andrews led the reply with a superb century but no one was able to accompany him for too long as wicket fell to Ollie Brown (4-20), Pete Davis (2-19) and Charlie Down (2-40) and the Knightshayes innings was done and dusted on 183.

Dave Loder (53), Pat McEndoo (65) and Dave Beer (47) were the principle run getters for Barnstaple & Pilton II as they chalked up 209-5 at basement side Bishop Nympton who they then bundled out for 112. There was a family fivefer for Barum as James Rowe claimed four wickets and Dad, Nigel, nailed one, whilst Chris Newton helped himself to three wickets.

Alan Hockin (55), Thomas Hall (37) and Chris Walker (26) were in the runs for Bude II as they closed on 176-9 at home to Petrockstowe and they then bowled the visiting side out for 109 with right arm seamer Mike Elis claiming 3-4 and Ollie Hobbs taking 2-26.
