NORTH DEVON LEAGUE  - WEEK 15
Results & tables

WEEK 15 of the North Devon Holiday Homes League was a washout with play possible at only one of the 17 venues that were scheduled to stage cricket. The only place to see willow strike leather was at Bideford where the 2nd XI entertained Newton Tracey II in a Division Four encounter.
The hard work, in particular from Paul Argyle and Martin Stewart to get the pitch ready to play, paid off with dividends for the home side as they recorded a 64-run victory.
Pete Stevens (64), Alan Withecombe (44) and Mark Bettis (23) were the principle run getters for the home side in a decent total of 175-8. Ollie Cowling was the pick of the bowlers with 3-48 and Jay Turner picked up 2-33. The reply began badly and ten overs in was 36-3. Newton Tracey did not recover from the poor start and closed on that great cricketing number, nelson (111). Graham Pearson (38) and Mark Cowling (16) were the main run getters whilst for the home side the wickets fell to Ollie Diamond (3-26), Mark Bettis (2-32) and skipper Darran Hart (2-16).
The win takes Bideford II into 2nd place in the table with four games remaining. They do not play again until the August 30 visit from Cheriton Fitzpaine, after which they travel to North Devon III and Victoria Park II before completing their season on September 19th with a home game against Lynton & Lynmouth II.

There should have been play at Instow, albeit a late start for, at 4.15pm when the game at Bideford finally started, they could have begun their game except for the fact that the night before scheduled visitors, basement side Bradninch cried off being unable to raise a side!
The 20 points that North Devon gain from the no show does keep their flickering title hopes alive although it looks very much as if the destination of the First Division trophy could go a long way to be settled this coming weekend with the meeting of the top two, Filleigh and Heathcoat at Knightshayes in Mid Devon.

Whichever sides loses the game will then find themselves in pole position, indeed the title will likely then be there’s to lose over the remaining games.

After Sunday Filleigh will have six games to negotiate, four at home and just the two away, at Bradninch and Newton Tracey, the current bottom two. They will meet Newton Tracey, Victoria Park, North Devon and Lynton & Lynmouth on their own square.

As for Heathcoat, there’s no disputing the fact that if they can inflict what would be only a second defeat of the campaign on Filleigh on Sunday, that they will be well on course to claim the top honour at the very first time of asking.

This time last year the Knightshayes side were plying their trade in the 2nd Division and after Sundays titanic game they will play two home and two away with the only time they venture out of Mid Devon being a trip to Bideford. They host Victoria Park and Bradninch and travel, on September 13th, to Sandford.

The month of July has been hit badly by the weather and the washout last weekend is the second such occasion this month. With just three more games to be played this month, even if next weekend is dry, it will mean that 50% of the month’s fixtures will have fallen to the weather!
